Not great, but not too bad either. Although his recovery is clearly still a work in progress, he's come along way.
For those who complain that the book has a flawed protagonist, I think that those are the only interesting kind. At first I thought this book might be too a little too "young" for my five year-old granddaughter, but she loved it. I particularly enjoyed the way Mia emphasizes that every relationship has its challenges and none are perfect.
