He was telling inspiring stories of deeds done by valiant people. The book is well written and compelling. Woodruff's definition of reverence is that it is "the well-developed capacity to have the feelings of awe, respect, and shame when these are the right feelings to have."
But reverence for what? What is particularly distinctive in this book is that Woodruff forcefully argues in the possibilities of a wide variety of objects of reverence -- not just for God, but for nature, for truth, for beauty, for community, and for the best human moral capacities.
